At n2 Productions we get requests for information from business people and entrepreneurs who want to know what goes into producing a TV Commercial and to what degree I, Neil Nunez get involved in the production process. So the following is an explanation and description of my typical level of involvement on a commercial project.
Sometimes I get involved as early as coming up with a concept and then developing that concept into a TV Commercial, be it a 15, 30, or 60-second TV spot. Sometimes it’s all three. I have also written entire infomercials with 60-second hard sell or direct response TV commercials built into the infomercial. Sometimes a client will bring the ad written and conceptualized and ready for film or video production. In any of these cases once the “creative” (what does the commercial say, how will it look, who or what will be in it) is agreed upon, I then finalize the budget and submitted to the client and/or advertising agency. Once the budget is approved we begin working on pre-production. What is pre-production: It is everything that happens in terms of planning and making arrangements before we take even the first shot. We’ll set up and conduct casting sessions if talent is needed. We will also handle procuring locations (homes, studios, streets, etc.) and go location scouting; visiting a location to determine how it will be used and photographed during the actual production. We make all necessary crew and gear arrangements and negotiate rates and make sure it all falls in line with the budget. Once it’s all planned out a client will be given a walk through of all the fore mentioned elements to make sure we are all on the same page and to avoid surprises. Depending on the budget we’ll also provide the client with storyboards of the commercial. Again depending on budget we’ll also work with elements like wardrobe and set design and props and developing a color palette with all of those elements to give the commercial a specific look and feel. Once prep-production is done a shoot date or dates are set. On the shoot I direct and get involved in every aspect from camera placement, angles and shot composition to lighting look and feel to directing the actor’s and getting credible compelling performances.
I surround my self with talented and knowledgeable production professionals who contribute something special to the production making the final product that much better. I am also an editor so on my projects I have much more control of the final product. Typically I will edit the ad to the specs agreed on with the client and also to be esthetically pleasing. If the budget allows I’ll work with a musician/composer on creating original music for the ad. If the budget does not allow for that, then I either pick out a piece of music from our royalty free production music library or from production music available from online libraries for a nominal fee. After the music is ready we’ll also do as much audio sweetening as necessary; things like cleaning up any background noise and making the audio spoken on-camera or voiced sound better. The client is then shown the ad for approval. If there are any changes we make the them and once it all comes together the client is given either Betacam SP or Digital Masters and in some cases we’ll even send out the ads to the TV station where it will be airing.
