In 2003 Scott Connolly the production head of The Office of Health Research of the University of Vermont asked Neil Nunez to write and produce a 30 second anti-smoking Public Service Announcement or PSA with a target audience of 4th through 6th graders. This was a wonderful opportunity for Neil Nunez to be totally creative and in control of a very special project. The University of Vermont would supply him with research findings about kids’ perception of smoking and would also provide guidelines and goals that the Public Service Announcements had to meet. It was then up to Neil to create and write effective and engaging PSA’s that he would later produce. Neil had originally been chosen by the university because they wanted a Hispanic to produce for a Hispanic audience but his first PSA creation entitled “Coolness Checklist” was such a hit both with the kids in the test groups and with the university faculty that he was asked to produce not only for kids in general but for other age groups and also for their anti-marijuana PSA campaign. In the two following years n2 Productions would be tapped again and again to write and produce an additional 10 Public Service Announcements. Below is a sample of those Public Service Announcements; every single one was written, produced, directed, and edited by Neil Nunez. While the university did not impose any format standards for production, meaning these PSA’s could have been shot on anything from a home camcorder to a movie camera; Neil saw this as an opportunity to create something special and he had all of these PSA’s shot in 35-millimeter film. Once the PSA’s were completed and sent to the university they were tested with kids all over the US. The spots produced by Neil consistently tested well with their intended audience and received high praise from both students and university faculty. Click on the Pictures to watch the PSA video.
